Just picked up this rental, a 1999 F350 Diesel. I’m used to driving a miata and a subaru so this thing is very different. It’s like piloting a cruise ship on the freeway. So far it just feels slow especially thanks to the 4 speed automatic transmission but from what I understand this thing isn’t built to win a drag race anyways. It’s for carrying heavy shit and getting work done. I’ll be surely underutilizing it’s capabilities but since it was the same cost as an F150 to rent, this seemed more fun. The diesel sounds are definitely cool as hell as well. Will see how this marathon day of moving goes!

I'll be going up a steep grade with all of my shit in the bed so it'll be an interesting adventure. Canyon carving will be extra interesting also.

I drove various diesel pickups during my time in the oilfield. After driving one, I get why people like them. I still think they’re pointless for a large majority of people who buy them, but I do get it.

Here’s the truck that took me back from the field one last time next to my 128i.

That 7.3 is faster than you think, just with all the turbo lag.  Powerbrake that thing to spool up the turbo off the line and make sure it is pointed in the direction you intend to travel when the light turns green.

The one nice thing about most trucks I've driven is that it might be slow, but it doesn't get much slower when loaded.

Well at least I’m used to turbo lag. I’ve only got 100 miles for this rental and it’s about 95 miles total plugged into Google maps for the day so I don’t have time to dick around too much.

consider that the 3.0 liter Powerstroke V6 in today’s F-150 has more horsepower and almost as much torque as that 7.3 did stock.

though with the Banks badge, who knows what that engine is actually doing now.

The F350 might have been the better choice anyway because of bigger bed/ higher payload for moving.

Yeah the 4 speed auto was definitely the worst part. Lots of hills to get to and from my place so the thing never really knew what gear it should be in. And shifting between 4th and 2nd seemed to be endless.

yup not the greatest. I cant seem to get myself to sell my old rusty 7.3... its very loud and rides like a freight train but I still love it
